At WMT, we often discuss “Website Feng Shui” (pronounced: fung shway). When a website doesn’t feel right and is “off” in areas of impact or effectiveness, we know we need to improve it’s Feng Shui. It involves creating valuable “ch’i“, which is the positive energy (navigational flow) and feel, organized for the success of your website (or webHOME).
Like the ancient 5,000 year-old Chinese practice, the website version seeks to attract health and wealth for the life of your business. Good Feng Shui can also increase romance which is important, since building relationships with customers is also a romance.
HERE ARE 11 TIPS FOR GOOD WEBSITE FENG SHUI:
1. APPEALING ENTRANCE AREA
Make sure your homepage is an appealing, welcoming grand entrance area. All energy will start and flow here. -Or, the ch’i will become constricted and potentially come to a complete stop here.
2. COMBINED FLOW AND STILLNESS
Your website ch’i can flow too fast, so you need areas of stillness, which can be focal points. This can be a logo and/or an area that appears on every page. Movement can be created in designated areas.
3. DON’T OVERWHELM OR CLUTTER
Don’t line up too many elements against both sides of the screen. This creates a negative feeling of clutter, closing in, and important items lose their impact.
4. WATER FLOW
Some ambient music in small files can have an affect similar to that of flowing water.
5. NAVIGATIONAL FLOW
The internet-user visiting your site must be able to find things easily and intuitively. If they get lost, stuck, or have to press the ‘back’ button, it creates stagnation. Good navigational flow is good ch’i.
6. NATURAL ELEMENTS
This can help on many websites. Instead of having cold, or all tech-styled elements, have some pleasant natural looking graphics (or less boxy shapes). Also, nothing too repetitive or over the top with natural items (like plants, flowers or sky) if it’s unrelated to your business – just capture the feel.
7. LIFE FORCE
This is the living, harmonizing energy which binds everything together. In your website, it includes authentic living connections. (Such as living information and/or thoughts as in blogs, news, quotes, interaction, etc.)
8. CLARITY
Your company’s key purposes for existence with your values and meaning should be clear. In addition, the graphics and text should be clear and easy to visually decipher. Messy, poor quality images is bad Feng Shui. This can make internet-users “SEE-sick.”
9. POWER SPOTS
The upper right corner of the homepage is also a prime power spot for “take action” elements. And, the homepage itself, in the top half contains a great deal of power over your site’s impact and navigation.
10. LIGHT AND COLOR
Become knowledgeable of the mood that each color brings and design with that in mind. Bright, clean pages bring good ch’i. Darkly colored -or worse, dingy colored pages are bad Feng Shui. Also, some airspace on your web pages is needed for lightness.
11. MONEY FLOW
The flow of money and wealth starts from the beginning of your website and continues to the end (in checkout) — making customers feel comfortable and trusting all the way through. Response mechanisms and checkouts in your website need to be easy and effective.
