Just as small investments compound over time financially, small Search Engine Optimization (SEO) steps over time will grow search visibility for your small business. Here are some simple small business SEO tips to get you started.
If you are looking for big SEO on a small budget, the #1 place to start is by creating a Google My Business account. It’s so easy and often so overlooked, and you can’t beat the price (free!). Google My Business helps you show up when customers search for your business or businesses like yours on Google Search and Maps. You can also post updates (like you can on Facebook, LinkedIn, and Twitter) to share what’s new and respond to reviews and add photos.
Even if you already have an account, get in and make sure it’s current and you are actively using it.
The #2 place to elevate SEO on a small budget is to get more active on social media, starting by blogging. A blog is the core of social media. Every new post is registered in search engines as a new page and when you blog more, you have more to share on Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and LinkedIn). SEO is driven by three main factors – architecture (how clean code is, meta tags, URL structure), content (quality and frequency) and linking (internal and external). Content is not king for SEO, it’s the whole kingdom! Content isn’t just about having the right keywords or phrases in text- it’s the frequency of content that search engines will devour. Linking from other quality sites to your small business website is great, but with blog posts, you can also link back to your own website (called internal links) in the blog text and with categories and tags.
The #3 thing to do is make time for an SEO audit. Essential components of an SEO audit and strategy are evaluating the three main factors that drive SEO – architecture (how clean code is, meta tags, URL structure), content (quality and frequency) and linking (internal and external). Knowing where you fall short helps you prioritize and create a plan.
