One of the *best* parts of my job is meeting (virtually) wonderfully wild web people who make a meaningful contribution to the World Wide Web. Through the Wild Web Woman Linked Group (a stellar networking group for professional web woman of all industries and job types), I connected with Sharon Mostyn, Social Media Maven, Blogger, Mom and Mega Wild Web Woman.

When I speak and teach, I often get asked “what should I blog about?” or “who are examples of bloggers that do it right?” and I find myself referring women like Sharon as perfect examples. I refer reader to her Motherhood, Marketing and Medical Mayhem blog. The theme is clear, her subtheme (Collaborate, Create, Communicate. It’s an alliteration thing) is fun and funny AND her content is spot-on. I found myself on her blog for a looooong time (healthy addiction!) and was so excited when Sharon agreed to be interviewed for our blog so we could all gain some “webdom” from her.

Enjoy learning more about WMT’s recent Positive Role Model and Wild Web Woman!!!

Meet Sharon Mostyn, Postive Web Marketing Role Model and Wild Web Woman

Meet Web Marketing Positive Role Model and Wild Web Woman – Sharon Mostyn, Blogger, Social Marketing Maven and Mom

If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Analytical, responsible, perfectionist.

What online social media platform are you most addicted to?
Although Facebook is a close second, I’m definitely most addicted to Twitter! It’s an amazing resource for gathering information – whether it’s finding out about the latest current events, sharing links from my Twitter friends, participating in conversations during Twitter chats, or crowdsourcing an idea, I can always find something of interest on Twitter.

Please share a professional phobia or obsession….confession session!
I’m a numbers junkie. Even after more than 20 years in direct response marketing, I could still be content to spend all day calculating key performance indicators (KPIs) like return on investment, conversion rates, cost per action, etc. I’ll take as much time as necessary to make the numbers match and figure out what can be done to improve them. Nothing makes me happier than when they are all trending in the right direction!

What is your favorite word or phrase? Why?
“Nicely done.” It was something that my son’s first lacrosse coach would tell the boys when they outperformed his (always high) expectations. It explains so many situations…and the more I get to use it, the better I like it!

What do you believe successful “wild web woman” traits are?
A) Thought leader – a wild web woman leads the way with innovative ideas
B) A good listener – a wild web woman listens to internal and external customers to determine what she needs to know
C) Willing to try new things – testing is a fundamental part of the web and wild web women are not afraid to test new ideas
D) Brave – when the testing doesn’t go as planned, a wild web woman doesn’t waste time being upset, she resolutely scrutinizes the results until she has a plan to turn a potential failure into success

How do you indulge yourself (every once in a while!) to stay healthy and balanced?
The tagline of my blog is Motherhood, Marketing, and Medical Mayhem and once you get to know me you’ll realize that keeping everyone healthy is often asking a bit much! With that said, spending time with family and friends helps to keep me balanced. My daughter forces me to indulge myself with the occasional trip to NYC, or to the spa, shopping, or even just a quick outing for ice cream/dessert! It’s our one-on-one time together with no deadlines, no pressure, and more often than not, no boys (meaning my husband and son)!

What are the top three most vital marketing ingredients that have helped you become the professional you are today?
1) A good work ethic
2) Analytical mindset
3) A good system for continuous improvement – benchmark, test, analyze, optimize, repeat
8. Where do you find inspiration to continue growing your business?

When you are faced with a setback or an enormous business challenge, what do you do to keep moving forward?
Just keep swimming { http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0266543/quotes } – after a setback you’ve got to assess where you are, then determine how to make your situation better, and do what has to be done to get it resolved and improved.

Who is your personal role model? What about this person do you truly admire and aspire to?
I have so many amazing professional role models, it’s impossible to choose just one! On a personal level, my role model would be my husband. He is one of the hardest-working people I know (both at home and at work), he never lets anything get him down, and he complements all of that by being a good friend and an amazing husband and father.

What has been your biggest achievement recently that you are proud of?
(See attained goals below…)

What are your goals for this upcoming year?
I’ve already attained so many goals this year and it’s only half over – gathering more engaged Twitter followers than I could ever imagine { http://twitter.com/sharonmostyn }, becoming the Marketing moderator/editor for the #SMchat Twitter chat { http://wthashtag.com/Smchat }, speaking at a MarketingProfs event with the most amazing people { http://www.marketingprofs.com/events/11/speakers }, guest posting on a blog
{ http://www.marketlikeachick.com/passion-in-marketing/ }, being part of an online life experience project { http://the3six5.posterous.com/may-3-2010-sharon-mostyn } – I’m working on some new projects that will take up a good deal of time, so my goal for the rest of the year is to make sure I don’t forget the important things by focusing on the big things.

What is your ideal work outfit? (The Team at Web Marketing Therapy works in our PJs whenever we can, what about you?)
My ideal work outfit is a t-shirt, jeans or shorts, and sneakers. My long-time boss told me once, “I didn’t hire you for how you look or what hours you work, I hired you to get the job done correctly, before the deadline, and under budget.” I worked for him for more than 20 years and he never once complained.

What is the ONE web marketing best practice that you would share with other Web Marketing Therapy readers?
Listen first. Listening is a skill that’s important both online and offline. It’s vitally important to listen to what people are saying to you and about you. Not only can you actively listen (and then interact) via social media channels, you can passively listen too, via Google Alerts or other monitoring platforms. In the same way you “listen” to body language cues, you can “listen” to what your web analytics are telling you by reviewing them daily and making changes in your site’s user experience.

Sharon – thank you for being such an inspiring wild web woman. Readers – to learn more about Sharon, start by visiting her social media nucleus (her blog!) on http://sharonmostyn.com/.

As the Wild Web Women at Web Marketing Therapy continue our quest to help companies put the pieces of the web marketing puzzle together so their web marketing work CLICKS, we are super-grateful for the healthy collaborations we are fortunate to have with other passionate professionals in this wild web world. I had the pleasure of interviewing Amy Rachlin, a web designer based in Los Angeles who, like Web Marketing Therapy, is dedicated to making a meaningful impact for clients through smart web marketing execution. Web Marketing Therapy is the support/advisory bridge that marries the art and science of the web with healthy web marketing strategy. We have three designers through our team, but MANY times we partner with other agencies like Amy’s firm. There is no competition in cyberspace, it is all about cooperation for helping companies implement healthy web marketing solutions and I love smarties like Amy. Speaking of being a smarty, I met Amy Rachlin through my partnership with SMARTY, a women’s entrepreneur group. We have a very similar philosophy about client relations, design and collaborative projects (bringing all the best brains together to help a client) As a business owner, wild web woman and web designer, it was fun to learn more about Amy. Enjoy the healthy dose of entrepreneurial inspiration!

Meet Amy Rachlin, Visual Storyteller:
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
-Driven
-Curious
-Insightful

Please share a professional phobia or obsession….confession session!
I’m obsessed with seeing what inspires my clients – colors & typography & shapes – it reveals so much. I love learning the language, the dictionary, that each client uses to describe what they want; its like getting inside their heads while we work together – and that means earning their trust. Each time I start a new project its as if they’re taking me on a little road trip, pointing out what grabs them… Then its my job to show them what they showed me.

What is your favorite word or phrase? Why?
“Managing expectations” I like my clients to know what they’re in for from the start; to have a concept of the steps we will walk through together and the timeline involved. I never assume they understand the creative process – I feel its my job to educate my clients so they can be a participant in the adventure of creating their vision. Otherwise they are passive bystanders, they’re just rubbernecking while I flash design in front of them. That’s only interesting for a second – we’re creating something to speak to them for as long as their business exists. Sometimes longer…

What do you believe successful “wild web woman” traits are?
Paying attention and getting invested – I can’t help my clients from the surface – we have to dig IN.

How do you indulge yourself (every once in a while!) to stay healthy and balanced?
I swim, swim, swim! The water is my liquid meditation.

What are the top three most vital marketing ingredients that have helped you become the professional you are today?
Integrity, consistency, and a sense of humor.

Where do you find inspiration to continue growing your business?
From the other professional women in my world – and from my team at my Studio. I love that feeling when someone says something unexpected – such as something hilarious that I might not have thought of. It’s those kinds of moments when I realize I’m surrounded by people who are going to stretch my mind. The best.

When you are faced with a setback or an enormous business challenge, what do you do to keep moving forward?
Literally, deep breaths while I get my bearings. Then, if it’s a setback, I examine what happened and where the ball was dropped so I can learn from it THIS time. If it’s a business challenge, I break it down into digestible sections that can be brought back together. I also use that time to decide where I need to ask for help or additional input. I take my ego out of it.

Who is your personal role model? What about this person do you truly admire and aspire to?
I have a number of them, some are parenting role models, some are professional, some are exceptional friends… what they all have in common is patience and confidence. They leave self-doubt at the door, they ask for help when they need it, and they allow for ebb and flow. As a result they flourish.

What has been your biggest achievement recently that you are proud of?
I have been an integral part of bringing together an amazing creative development team. Over the last year we have developed a kind of short-hand in communication that enables us to work together smoothly, even when we’re pooped. I believe it is going to be the cornerstone of growing our agency.

What are your goals for this upcoming year?
To take our agency to the next level. We love our entrepreneurial clients and will always support their amazing endeavors, but now we’re looking to add established companies to our roster. To be the ‘agency of record’ for _____________.

What is your ideal work outfit? (We work in our PJs whenever we can, what about you?)
Gee, I’m still in my PJ’s as I type this and it’s 1pm. I guess that leaves hats? Ideally whatever I have on is comfortable enough to wear in front of my computer, but allows me to get out for a walk in public and look like I have some style commensurate with my design abilities. Oh, and clean hair is always a bonus…

What do you think is the most challenging part about being a female entrepreneur? How do you overcome this challenge?
Personally, I don’t find being a female entrepreneur as a particular challenge; my field doesn’t feel like its dominated by gender. As an entrepreneur I’ve had to learn to embrace that I may not always know what’s coming – even with all the planning and goal-setting – and that’s a huge challenge for me because I am not about suspense. I like to know.

Thanks for the great interview Amy! Readers, you can learn more about Amy on her website amyrachlin.com

Interviewing wild web women who make a meaningful contribution in cyberspace always rocks my she-geek world. I virtually met Dani Spies, L.A. based Culinary Nutritionist and a Certified Fitness Trainer when she flexed her video “weblebrity” skills featuring a butter lettuce recipe for a client a few years ago and have had a girl crush on her ever since. I love her web solution www.danispies.com and her “Clean, Simple, Delicious Living” video blog. Her authenticity, passion for sharing healthy (but non-depriving) foods and showing (vs. just telling) her advice via brilliant videos makes her a positive web marketing role model.

This wild web woman is married to Beng Spies, the video master behind her stellar vlog (video + blog = vlog) and is also a new mom (congrats!)

Dani is an example of a woman who can have it all and look cute while doing it (the camera does not lie!) Enjoy the blog inspiration and Dani, thanks for a great interview!

Meet Dani Spies, Dani Spies, Vlogger and Culinary Weblebrity
If you had to describe yourself in three words, what would they be?
Curious, analytical and silly.

What online social media platform are you most addicted to? (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, Linked, etc).
Twitter. Although I need to tweet more and stalk less.

Dani Spies, Wild Web Woman and Video Goddess

Please share a professional phobia or obsession -confession session!
This is easy -my phobia hands down is a fear of being wrong, which is SO silly because I am wrong ALL the time!

What do you believe successful wild web woman traits are?
Vision, consistency, and the ability to be wrong A LOT and keep moving forward.

How do you indulge yourself (every once in a while!) to stay healthy and balanced?
Margaritas.

What are the top three most vital marketing ingredients that have helped you become the professional you are today?
I don’t! I always want to learn!

Where do you find inspiration to continue growing your business?
It’s my passion. I can’t not do it I want to share what I know and learn.

When you are faced with a setback or an enormous business challenge, what do you do to keep moving forward?
Stay focused on my goals.

Who is your personal role model? What about this person do you truly admire and aspire to?
Yikes, so many. Ellen, Oprah, Tosca Reno

What has been your biggest achievement recently that you are proud of?
Becoming a Mom.

What are your goals for this upcoming year?
To wrap my mind around social networking and marketing and use it to help reach a larger audience.

What is your ideal work outfit? (We work in our PJs whenever we can, what about you?)
Workout clothes since I am always balancing the computer, the kitchen, a baby, and errands I like to be comfortable and mobile without having to worry about getting dirty!

What do you think is the most challenging part about being a female entrepreneur? How do you overcome this challenge?
Working alone most of the time. I am a synergestic-kind-of-gal. I thrive off of team work but right now most of what I am doing is solo at my desk or in my kitchen. I know as I am able to grow my vision this will change so I try to stay focused on the bigger picture.

What is the ONE web marketing best practice that you would share with other Web Marketing Therapy readers?
Consistency, consistency, consistency.
