Every Wednesday, the wild web women (the ones who live in Santa Barbara) meet for Wild Web Woman Wednesday aka WWWW (Come on, we are marketing chicks, we acronym EVERYTHING!)

I love the creativity that happens when we get together, but there is something kind of dangerous about us when we mix our she-geek girlishness, sugar, creative energy THEN throw in a Hallmark Holiday. Our WMT morning meeting about content, clients and action items digressed into Valentine’s Day talk then turned into being open and honest about our marketing men school-girl crushes…then we started brainstorming who the “hottest” marketing men were…

We love Mad Marketing Men!

So, In the name of Valentine’s Day and in true Marketing Therapy-esque “be open and share your feelings” fashion, the Wild Web Woman team at Web Marketing Therapy have publicly professed our love for our Top Marketing Man Crushes.

AT LEAST we constructively professed our love on a web marketing best practice platform, Squidoo, that was founded by Seth Godin, one of our Marketing Man crush picks.

Marketing Man crushes are healthy. They inspire and motivate us to continue helping others engage in meaningful marketing while spreading marketing healing and empowerment across the great WILD web!

You’ll have to read for yourself to see WHY we picked these men, but our top Marketing Man crushes were:

My name is Lorrie Thomas. I am a social media addict. Deep down, I always knew I had a problem, but I thought it was just something I did for fun…I could quit anytime. My friends experiment with social media crack and they have families and jobs, so I thought if I did social media every once in a while too that it was all ok.

But the withdrawal kicked in this weekend and I found myself not knowing who I was. I felt alone and scared. I separated my she-geek self away from my computer on Saturday (thankyouverymuch) to hit my “free therapy” de-stress walk (it took seven miles of Santa Barbara walking to zen out) and as I started walking, I started having pangs of twitteritis. I was without my crackberry and even though it was a beautiful day, all I wanted to do was hit Hellotxt with the RANDOMEST COMMENTS that kept popping up in my head…things like Lorrie is:
**Wondering why people buy nice BMWs then give them bad paint jobs**
**Laughing at the people who rent surry bikes but haven’t exercised in 20 years**
**Bummed she can’t go to Costa Rica with Julie**
**Wanting a wall of post its to map all the wild web woman words we make up**
**Thinks making up a Facebook persona profile then claiming him as her boyfriend would be funny…and marketable**

and then I thought…

**WHO CARES??????**

Was I on the verge of becoming a full fleged anti-social media convert……….OR………was I over reacting?

Then it hit me….I may not need rehab, social media may be marketing recovery!!!

The more I thought about it, the more I reflected on my twitteritis outbreaks and the posts that seem to get the most reactions are the ones that are the most RANDOM.

Web Marketing is the most trackable medium. Social media (blogs, social media, microblogging) creates connection and community and although some of us junkie whores need to purge random terrets outbursts because it is human nature to want to be heard, it is worth pointing out that some people want to hear you and social media addictions can be used for good.

David Meerman Scott, one of the wild web women’s marketing idols, wrote his book chapters in

by following his most popular blog posts in his www.webinknow.com blog. He purged this thoughts on thought leadership, listened to what the feedback was then served his audience with a book that our team treats like our bible.

When I feel like I “should” post marketing-educational posts because I have weak moments and fear that I need to appeal to crusty old farts that are afraid to embrace the new rules of marketing or do not find a sense of humor in our therapy puns, you know what? I GET NO RESPONSE. My odd, quirky, smarty twitter outbreaks tend to get more reaction when they are authentic then blah (or not at all) so I think that although I need to work on my urge to purge my passion and get over my insecurities that nobody cares, I have to remember that I am dealing with a social medium that will tell me if there is response and what I need to do is chillax and just be true to myself and pay attention to feedback.

And speaking of being authentic, I need to purge how it doesn’t help when I am on the verge of checking myself in for social media obsessive compulsive behavior disorders to get emails from Yammer that give me anti-social media guilt (real email below)

Your coworkers posted 22 updates on Yammer last week.
We haven’t heard from you lately. You can post an update to the lorriethomas.com network by replying to this email.

Ideas for posting:
* Say what you’re doing.
* Start a discussion.
* Share a link or news item.
* Ask a question.

Well, I have to go now and check my Facebook page, post something on Yammer to the Wild Web Women so I don’t feel like a loser then hellotext my post to rally support.

Admitting that you have a problem is the first step to recovery. I have to remember that I am not alone and that if I am true to myself and pay attention to the universe, I think I will be ok…..

…will I be ok??

Small Business Owners in Marketing Therapy – LISTEN UP! If you are doing all the wild web marketing work to make your small business BIG with web marketing (like article distribution, online press releases, blog content and more), then it is time to start obsessing over yourself and see what is being found about your organization on the world wide web!

Google Alerts is free technology and the *best* way to track what the world wide web is pulling up about you…see what your prospective customers see! You can tell Google (in a matter of 5 seconds of effort) what you want them to search and send you. Get feeds on web content with your name, company name, various spellings of your company name and VIOLA! The Google gods will spoon feed you scoop….and you can get this content once a day, weekly or as it happens….Google rocks (yes, we are total Google Girls) Those of you who are uber obsessive may even want to scope out your competition – get Google alerts on them too!

Stalking and obsessing with Google Alerts is actually Marketing Therapist aproved behavior. Google Alerts is a healthy web marketing practice, because it helps professionals stay self-aware, which is healthy marketing behavior.

OUTLIER – an observation that is distinct from the rest of the data (translation, not like the other kids)

Today’s word of the day is being brought to you by The Colbert Report

I have always had an obsession with Malcolm Gladwell. It started when I read the Tipping Point, then Blink and now, thanks to getting my Cobert Report video clips, I learn that Mr. Gladwell has a new book out!

I can’t wait to read how the kids (who are not quite like the other kids) are high candidates for success. Anyone read the book yet? I would love thoughts and opinions!

Get this book! Outliers: The Story of Success

Uh my gawad, I love this man!!

It’s my blog so I can be open and honest about my obsessions. One of my obsessions is over a wild marketing man, Mr. Seth Godin. There is nothing that makes a web marketing therapist giddier than a sharp, brilliant, marketing-savvy pro (oh, and a man that is willing to self-promote and become ...

It’s my blog so I can be open and honest about my obsessions. One of my obsessions is over a wild marketing man, Mr. Seth Godin. There is nothing that makes a web marketing therapist giddier than a sharp, brilliant, marketing-savvy pro (oh, and a man that is willing to self-promote and become a weblebrity is another wow factor for us wild web women!!)

Mr. “My Obsession” Godin did a BRILLIANT post today on The economy, the press and the paradox . You can read the post and glean your own opinion, but here’s the teaser:

“Wealth is not created by financial manipulation, the trading of equities or the financing of banks. They just enable it. Wealth is created by productivity. Productive communities generate more of value. Productivity comes from innovation. Innovation comes from investment and change.”

I hear a lot of people complain that web marketing or running a company is hard work and you know what I say??????

Damn right it’s hard work!!!!

It requires time, monetary investment and willingness to challenge/change current thinking to embrace the new rules of marketing and thrive in the new world we work and live in!

Nobody is entitled to wealth. Success comes from hard work and smart marketing. There is no shortcut people!! If you want to have success in business and life you have to be willing to buck up, pound the pavement and own it…and do kick-a%$ marketing. When it comes to new marketing, I believe that:

WE ARE PAID EQUALLY TO HOW MUCH WE ARE WILLING TO THINK
and
IT’S NOT ABOUT WHAT WE KNOW, BUT WHAT WE ARE OPEN TO LEARNING

You can love what you do and please embrace the “vocation is my vacation” mentality, but get over the American commercial crud that cons people into buying the shortcut of “I work two hours a day in my pajamas and make millions” dream. We gotta realize that productivity is required.

It’s about marketing smart, not hard, but smart does require effort, so shift your thinking to get that.

The old marketing rules are dying, the new ones are about being real, innovative, industrious, and web-savvy. It’s not easy, but if you are willing to learn and work at it you will win.

I believe that investing in web marketing productivity will take companies to a new level, and do agree with the Godin post that there will be a paradigm shift…when that shift hits, I want to be on Seth Godin’s boat…

…do you??
