Today, Friday the 13th, Web Marketing Therapy received a “cry for help” from someone who had their Facebook account hacked. True web marketing victim situation – not fun

We couldn’t un-do what was already done, but we can offer advice and support when web marketing breakdowns occur…

I can only imagine the horror that hits when your social center of communication is being over run with messages that are not from you, not in line with your brand and/or disturbing the social contacts you have developed –absolutely awful.

We have not had clients with this issue (thank gawad) but we are well aware that this can be a harsh reality for professionals.

Advice from The Marketing Therapist to Avoid Social Media Victimization:

1. Change Your Passwords Frequently.
I am guilty of having very predictable passwords on my Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin (ask any of the Wild Web Women who can hack into any of my accounts) Once a month, change your passwords to help avoid hackers and do not use passwords that are too predictable (like pet names, birth date, mother’s maiden name, items you answer elsewhere that can be scanned and hacked).

2. Check Your Social Media accounts daily.
The sooner you can catch a hack, the sooner you can stop it. Abandoned accounts can be over-run and run into the ground if they go undetected.

3. If you get hacked – send an email out to your contacts asap to let them know what is going on, disable your account and ALERT the social media site (Facebook, Linkedin, Twitter, etc.)

May the web marketing force be with you this Friday the 13th…
