I gave a talk at a local Pecha Kucha event called: markeding – the mashup of marketing and education.

If you are wondering what the heck Pecha Kucha is…it is a presentation where the presenter has to deliver a talk in 6 minutes and 40 seconds…20 slidesx20 seconds a slide…timed (I have no control over the screen). It keeps talks pithy, powerful and to the point.

Marketing is not an “icky yucky” thing – especially when we approach marketing from an educational foundation. markeding changes the way we think about marketing as well as approach marketing. Enjoy this video. More on markeding to come!!

All too often, I hear business owners say things like:

“I’m so busy, I don’t have time to work on marketing”

“When I am done with my new website, I need to start marketing”

“Marketing is something that only wealthy companies can afford”

Wrong, wrong and WRONG! Marketing is about making relationships. Relationships are what fuel a business.

See graphic below to illustrate my point. There is act of actually doing the work in your business (Ops), then there is the financial and administrative work that helps support your business (Admin), then there is the work to help cultivate the relationships to make and keep business (Marketing). Ops, Admin and Marketing work together to help your company make money honey!

Marketing is a Critical Piece of your Business!

Marketing includes customer service, communications, branding, social media marketing, awareness-building, growing relationships, sales, web marketing, connections and more.

If you care about your business, then care enough to make time for marketing. It doesn’t have to be difficult.

Having experts advise on what areas to focus on so you spend your time wisely is a smart investment.

Marketing should be part of your day to day business. If it seems too difficult, expensive, or overwhelming then something is wrong.

A marketing breakdown can get you to marketing breakthroughs. Wanna talk? Share your feelings with us!

My inspiration for this post came from this last piece of buzz on DealBo%k called Businesses Take A Cautious Approach to Disclosures Using Social Media.

The Securities and Exchange Commission’s (SEC) decision to authorize the use of social media as an acceptable communication outlet for companies to announce information to investors has opened up a floodgate of concerns. Concerns like being able to monitor comments quickly enough, the power of the public’s (very public!) commentary in response to news that could sway decisions and brand reputation and lastly, whether social media disclosures are even going to reach the right people.

Corporations CANNOT take their disclosures to social media unless they have a clearly defined social media strategy.

Don’t plan to fail by failing to plan. If you are a corporation looking at new social media disclosures, set clear policies and procedures.

A strategic social media messaging fram
ework needs to include plans for:

-Monitoring

-Responding

-Measuring

Some organizations may opt to not share information on social media, but that does not mean that they can ignore their social media platforms, as the public may be making comments.

Successful journeys begin with a map and directions – having a social media strategy is the most critical step with this new communication option.

The recent news about Twitter’s hacking and how it exposes “social media weakness” does expose weakness in Twitter’s security, but it makes me think about what social media is all about and what part we (as social citizens) need to do. As worrisome as this hack can make investors and users of Twitter, I actually see this incident as an opportunity for people and organizations to pay better attention to their Twitter accounts, and all social media for that matter. Hacking is a threat on all social media marketing tools – blogs, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube.

Social media isn’t something you “set and forget”. Social media requires management.

What can we do? Change your passwords frequently and if you are going to use social media tools then we need to proactively check in on them. Social media requires proactivity – not just reactivity to attacks. If you have social media accounts that you don’t use, then delete them!

I know Twitter is taking extensive action to correct this, but as someone who has no issues dishing out tough love on negative naysayers, I also invite the users of this free technology to act like social citizens and do their part to be on top of their presence on all social media outlets.

If an organization is hacked, communicate this on all social media outlets (your blog, Facebook, Twitter, online press releases) to keep their readers in the loop. Nothing is worse then going silent on readers when hacking crises hit. Being hacked is nothing any company wants. It can look to the public like a sign of weakness unless the organization jumps on the issue and proactively apologizes to their readers. Even the hack is not the fault of the organization, they need to own the issue. A hacked organization needs to do more than openly apologize, especially a social-centric one. The organization needs to educate the public on why this happened and what steps they are taking to correct it. The public understands apologies, but sorries without substance are meaningless.

The top three things to do when your company is hacked are:

-Publicly communicate acknowledgement of the accident

-Define a plan on how to help avoid future hacks

-Communicate the plan to help reinforce trust
