Link to Customers and Link to Profits with Internal and External Linking

I always thought blue underlined words in an article meant to stay away. I’ll admit it, if I saw an articled covered in blue, I would immediately think spam. Unfortunately, many of these “covered in blue” websites offer great information that is being missed because they are linking incorrectly. I decided that if you are new to the online marketing world, linking can seem a bit confusing. After all, you don’t want your webpage to say “stay away” to visitors; you want to optimize it using linking correctly. Aside from just navigation benefits for visitors, linking helps to get your website ranked within major search engines. In other words, linking should be an important part of any website’s Search Engine Optimization (SEO) strategy—startups included. The first type of linking you can utilize on your website is internal linking.

The “Must-Knows” of Internal Linking

Internal linking simply means linking between web pages of your website. For example, if someone is reading an article on your site about how important it is to work with other companies, you may want to link to the “guidelines for guest posting” page you have on your site. Consider a few of the benefits of internal linking:

• Improves search engine page rank—Your page rank has a lot to do with where your website will show up on a search engine. The more links on quality pages you have linking to a specific page, the higher page rank for that specific page. Major search engines look at this page rank to determine where your website will rank on their search engine pages.

• Makes content easier to navigate—Users may find a specific page on your website that answers their questions pretty well, but there is a chance you have another, more specific webpage that answers their questions even better. By linking to other pages within your website, visitors will be able to find exactly what they are looking for faster and easier. I recommend having the internal link open a new window so readers can easily go back to a webpage if they wish.

• Helps search engines index your content more effectively—Search engines can file your site more accurately and more conveniently if you have a lot of internal links. This will ultimately help potential customers find your site easier on search engines (even if you’re not ranked number one).

Overall, internal linking is something that benefits everyone. Linking is as easy as right clicking a word or group of words, scrolling down to hyperlink, and inserting the URL for the page you wish to link to. This same process can be done when you are looking to use the second type of linking—external linking.

The “Gotta Have Its” of External Linking:

External linking refers to links that come from one website and direct you to another. This can go one of two ways: One, another site can link to your site (making you the external link), or two, you can link back to another site from your website. There are a few different benefits to taking advantage of these two ways to use an external link:

• Credibility—External linking is a great way to establish credibility. On the one hand, if you are going to quote another website’s article, then you can simply link back to that article within the piece that you are writing. This lets readers know where you are getting your information and avoids plagiarism issues. On the other hand, if a quality site is linking back to your website, you will be given instant credibility. After all, what website is going to link back to a website with bad information?

• Increased Traffic—If other quality websites are linking back to your website, customers from those other websites will begin to recognize your company. In other words, you will be potentially gaining a good number of customers from every website that links back to your pages.

• Improves search engine page rank—External links will help grow your page rank in the same way that internal links do. The more quality pages linking back to your site, the better your site will look to major search engines.

As companies get larger, they may begin to guest post on other websites, and this will allow them to make sure they are an external link on another page. In some instances, you can create a partnership with another company and agree to exchange links on the other’s website. This will also ensure that you are getting enough links to help your page rank.

The “Absolute Necessities” When Using Internal and External Linking

Briefly I would like to talk about how annoying it is when an article is filled with links—those blue underlined words I was talking about. Linking is great for all the reasons listed above, but too much linking will turn visitors away. Make sure that you have no more than five links on one page, and make sure these links are useful. Do not link to pages just to link—this will not fool Google, and it will not fool your visitors.

In the end, understanding the basics of linking is the first step in understanding SEO and webpage optimization. Linking will help major search engines make their decisions, customers make their decisions, and you to make money.

Next, you see a wonder wheel of other phrases that match your searched word! You can see what phrases also describe your products and/or services and add them to your SEO list or to your Paid Search key phrases that you buy on Google, Yahoo or Bing.

You can click any phrase to have it expand to other phrases based on your interest

Is Your SEO Apropos or a No?

How appropriate that the image I chose to enhance this post was named “ethical SEO”! So this great semi-satirical article was posted on Slate on Tuesday, and I had to share!

But first! Before I link to the article, please read it knowing that there is a lesson or two in there: Keyword stuffing is a big SEO “NO”. This article also is a great example of how some web publications try to “outsmart” search engines. Neither of these are on Web Marketing Therapy’s “Healthy Marketing” list. And it also has interesting speculations about the future of Google’s algorithms . . . oh, and it discusses AOL’s acquisition of Huffington Post, but that’s just an aside. LOL! You’ll be laughing too after you read it.
