It has become almost too easy to get wrapped up in all the “recession” talk. Although the general consensus has been steadfastly “things are really tough right now and it will probably get worse”, a lot of people are also expressing genuine disgust at the abundance of attention we are paying to the gloomy economic situation.
So what does that mean? Yes, things are rough and the problems are REAL. No, it’s not the end of the world as we know it and people are generally fed up with being “depressed.”
My SOLUTION!!!: Sit down. Take a few deep breaths. And put it all in perspective!
As a freshly graduated 22-year-old, I know a thing or two about being completely uncertain of how to pay my bills. I was told as a first year college student that “being a political science major will mean you will work at Starbucks and make other people coffee after you graduate.” I scoffed at this idea at the time—later, I found out that it was not far from the truth.
In my third year of college, my international economics professor warned us that “we are graduating during one of the worst times for finding jobs.” (I took on Business Economics as a second major after my 1st year professor warned me of my imminent caffeine-industry fate.) By this time, things were getting really nasty and I knew that I had to prepare myself for post-grad survival.
For most the fall of 2008 through the spring of 2009 (that’s about 9 months, when you do the math), I searched untiringly for employment. Did it become frustrating and depressing (like the current economic climate)? YES and quite frequently too!
BUT I DID NOT GIVE UP!
I could not quit and here are the top three reasons:
1. I knew I’d be totally self-reliant after I graduate so it was either find a job or find a waterproof cardboard box to live in (joking, sort of). aka, I had a real sense of urgency.
2. I was a college graduate and I knew I had valuable skills to contribute, I just had to find the right people at the right time. In other words, I was self-aware of my assets.
3. I felt extremely happy to be living in California with nice weather and with the front page of the New York Times on my home screen, I knew I need to be grateful. So, I put my situation in a healthy perspective.
The survival of a business is not much different—when the internal morale is gone, can profits keep soaring? With economic hardship comes innovative business strategies.
As marketing wild web women, we are quite good at putting a positive spin on the sometimes “unsexy” terms. But since when has being positive become synonymous with shielding away from reality?
So I say, this is a serious recession. It is also a serious test of your creativity and resilience. When we’re being pushed (going back to that sense of urgency), we achieve some of the most remarkable things. I cannot WAIT to see the great things to come out of this economic makeover!
Remember: PUSH YOURSELF. KNOW YOUR ASSETS. AND PUT THINGS IN PERSPECTIVE.
Pretty soon, you will find yourself and your business not only surviving in this recession, but thriving in it! And then just imagine how much stronger and more valuable of a business you will be when the recession thaws out!
