As good marketers, a part of our daily job is to edit and proofread in order to make sure we do not make any embarrassing spelling errrors (yes, that was on purpose to test who’s reading carefully!
) This may sound terribly obvious, but you would be surprised at how many of us don’t read out loud! Yes, I am indeed talking about the act of reading written words out loud to yourself or others around you. Remember how much FUN that used to be back in elementary school when the teacher called on students in turns to read select passages?
It turns out, reading out loud can help make or break your professional image. For instance, an important email to a big potential client may not go over well with obvious spelling mistakes; the confusion of there vs. their, perhaps? You do not want to lose your professional dignity over something a careful glance-over could have prevented. Poor readability in written work will reflect poorly on you as a professional and may jeopardize the way people look at your abilities. You can be the most brilliant person but if you’re notoriously sloppy, can I trust you with my money? No.
I have been encouraged to constantly read out loud to check for readability; and if I’m in the mood–I’ll even read out loud with the enthusiasm of a 7-year-old (I used to LOVE reading out loud in class). Why not have some fun at work, right?
WHEN IN DOUBT, READ OUT LOUD.
(Thank you Lorrie, for the inspirational insight into success!)
