Michael Crichton, the author best known for the novels “Jurassic Park” and “State of Fear,” has died of cancer at the age of 66.
And while many will be remembering the great storyteller for his irresistible thrillers and scientific mysteries, what I will remember about him the most is that time he pulled a fast one on me!
Let me first admit that puppies are my addiction. So when I heard about the PermaPuppy (the puppy that remains young while you grown old), I knew I had to go out and get one right away!
Then I realized that the adorable PermaPuppies were not going to be mine anytime soon. Sadly, it was all just HarperCollins’ way of promoting Crichton’s 2006 book “Next.” I’m embarrassed to say that it took me awhile to realize this – but that’s just how genius the campaign was!
To help readers explore the new novel about genetics gone wild, the publishers set up a web site for the fictitious company NEXTgencode, along with a brash online viral marketing campaign complete with PermaPuppies and a MySpace page full of surprises!
With inspired marketing like that, you’ll never be forgotten.
