It’s a challenge for many of us to maintain the balance between work and life outside work. As a mom to an almost 5-year-old, I often struggle to not feel a little guilt when I’m working and away from my son, as well as a little guilt for not working when I’m off playing with my family or wasting time on my guilty pleasure – reality TV. Lorrie aka The Marketing Therapist, always says “We aren’t selling oxygen – it’s ok to unplug” but sometimes it just doesn’t feel like you CAN get away.
As I was cruising through my Facebook feeds this morning during a break from work, I stumbled upon an article by Amy Swift Crosby, SMARTY founder and long time WMT friend, titled “10 Reasons Why You Shouldn’t be Working Right Now“. Of course, I was instantly enticed by her “permission slip to step away from my computer”.
A couple of my favorite reasons from Amy’s list are:
- “A free mind makes many ideas ” There have been many times when I can’t easily determine the best next step but I ALWAYS find that physically stepping away from what I’m working on will often bring clarity. It’s great to remember that it’s ok to not always be working on or in your business – you might actually be MORE productive if you aren’t always working! The free time you take will also allow your ideas to expand!
- “You only have right now” This is one I am constantly reminded of as it seems time is flying by while I watch my son grow, learn and explore. I hate to waste any time I have to spend with him !
What a great reminder that it is OK to take a break from work and ENJOY life outside of your business! As Amy says, “Take an adventure, it makes you more interesting”.
I’m off to plan my next adventure, or perhaps escape from civilization is more like it – to my new favorite spot accessible only by ferry and without any modern day comforts-just a beach and some wild horses-Shackleford Banks, NC!
