I am detecting a dangerous pattern amongst professionals. They expect people to:
A. Read their minds
B. Hand deliver goodness to them
C. Drop work in their lap without doing any work to get it
D. Take full responsibility and not have to take part in management
E. Remember everything they ever said over conversations or email
If you believe any of these ASSumptions above then you get a F. = Failure to Own Your Success
You want success? Then SPEAK UP!
Whether we are trying to close sales, manage web designers, work with vendors, colleagues, etc., we HAVE TO COMMUNICATE and ASK FOR WHAT WE WANT/NEED. I spoke with someone this week who said he was wondering why nobody approached him to buy ads on his site and I looked all over his site (no mention of ad sales) and I asked who he approached to sell ads to and he was silent.
We have to take responsibility and speak up for what we need. Use your words to get clarification on things, to ask for what you want and to partner with others. Other people are not the enemy, how you choose to work with others is your choice and conversations are where creativity begins.
Nobody is perfect. Nobody can read your mind or know what you can do for them or what you think they should be doing. Learn how to communicate verbally, textually and via your web marketing to speak up.
Successful people do things unsuccessful people won’t.
Using the power of proactive communication will transform your business. Do this with your web tools and to manage your personal/professional conduct.
Example: A website owner asks you to do a blog post. You take tons of time to write it and it never appears on the blog.
You can:
A. Feel sorry for yourself
B. Send a snarky email
C. Send a “Hi, it was great taking the time to produce that blog post for you. I noticed it was not on your site yet. I am happy to make changes to help you out. I look forward to hearing from you.
God helps those who help themselves.
Speaking up does not mean you have to shout. Respect is reciprocal. Know who you are, what you do, the value of what you do and get out there and make a dent in this wild web world!
