Recently, on April 16th, Ashton Kutcher became the first user on Twitter (a social media networking site) to have more than ONE MILLION FOLLOWERS.
This came after Kutcher challenged CNN (and even CNN’s Larry King) to see who would be the first to capture a million Twitterers! CNN started ahead by about 50,000.
Kutcher, who came up with the idea, expressed how he was inspired by the concept that he as an individual could potentially beat a large network like CNN. It was an exciting race and triumph for Kutcher and his followers. (One of Kutcher’s followers even provided him with a statistical analysis of how he believed Kutcher would surpass CNN.)
Just in case you think this is all fun and games, think again… Think about what this may actually mean for you and your business…
Social Media Networking may very well be the new “David vs. Goliath Opportunity” for small business.
You as an individual or small company can make a difference and make a BIG IMPACT with this new technology. You really just need a compelling voice and some marketing savvy to connect with those who are interested in joining in and participating.
What made this Twitter race more meaningful is that Kutcher also connected to a worthy cause. If his networking goal was met, Kutcher announced that he would donate $100,000 to a malaria charity that would provide mosquito nets to help stop the spread of the disease. Despite having lost the challenge, CNN joined the cause by also donating 10,000 mosquito nets. Other celebrity Twitterers (like Ryan Seacrest, Oprah Winfrey, Demi Moore and others) followed suite and contributed to the malaria fighting charity.
On Larry King Live, Larry said that this internet challenge and the whole experience was “a phenomenon.” He graciously interviewed Ashton and began learning about what it meant to “tweet.”

“We can and will create our media,” said Kutcher, who celebrated his victory on Twitter saying, “Victory is ours!”
We at Web Marketing Therapy (WMT) ask:
What social media networking are YOU tapping? What will be YOUR VICTORY for YOUR BUSINESS and YOUR CUSTOMERS?
There is an opportunity to share and exchange ideas… and even create “a movement” that can make a difference. It represents a unique opportunity for community-building and problem-solving with common threads of interest.
