Social Media Marketing for Beginners: Twitter Explained in Plain English

When I teach Social Media Marketing at UCSB Extension with Lorrie Thomas, I look forward to introducing the class to Twitter. The class usually has it’s share of healthy skeptics who have heard all the buzz but aren’t quite ready to start sporting their favorite Tweets on a t-shirt. So it’s great to explore Twitter and all its possibilities with the uninitiated.

Organizations are doing great things on Twitter - and it’s not just buzz. There are examples cropping up every day of how it’s helping businesses - both big and small - connect directly with people in ways that just weren’t possible before. But where do you start?

For those brand new to Twitter, I recommend Common Craft’s Twitter in Plain English. They do an excellent job of translating the new tools on the wild wild web so everyone can get it! We like to show it to our social media marketing students as an excellent introduction to Twitter. It’s also a great video to revisit for Twitter inspiration and a powerful tool when trying to communicate the power of Twitter to your organization. Our Marketing Maven Kaili also uses it to explain Twitter to her parents!

I usually like most of the CommonCraft videos produced, but I have to admin that I don’t like this one. ‘What are you doing?’ While that may be how Twitter and most people promote Twitter, from a professional/business point-of-view, it doesn’t make sense.

To be honest, I am not overly concerned about what people doing. I use Twitter from mostly a professional/networking frameset. I have met and communicated with some great people in higher education web (my industry) and learned some valuable information. Quite often I’ll share with my web guys a tool or article and they asked, ‘Where did you find it?’ My answer is usually Twitter.

I wrote an article about my experiences and observations of Twitter.

I’m glad you’re promoting the use of the Twitter and I do think at a very basic level, the CommonCraft video is good, but the important thing is to find a practical and effective use of Twitter. That usually amounts to more than ‘What are you doing?’

Hi Mike! Great article on Twitter - thanks for sharing. I agree that this is a very basic intro to Twitter but I like it because it touches an important point - that Twitter can be used to create immediate and direct connections with people who care (friends, family, customers, potential clients, etc.) And organizations and professionals are harnessing this in so many ways - like you want to know what people in higher education are doing and caring about and it provides you direct access to individuals in that community. There is plenty of potential that we are still uncovering - and I look forward to hearing more of your thoughts! See ya on Twitter too!

    Hi Emilia,
Great class on Social Media Marketing at UCSB! Sorry it’s over so soon. There was a lot of terrific content. The guest speakers were amazing! All the Twitter examples encourage me to start exploring it as a way to promote our vacation rentals in Santa Barbara. I heartily recommend the Social Media Marketing to others who would like to know how to promote their business on the wild wild web using all the social media tools that are available. See you on Twitter!
