One of my virtual marketing allies, Jim Mukerjee, a San Francisco Bay Area-based IT and Solutions Marketing expert, sent me a GREAT Businessweek article called Skip Job Boards and Use Social Media Instead.

If you want a job, it’s not about WHAT you know…it’s about WHO you know.  And in today’s time-crunched society, if you want to know professionals, then you better own it and hit the social media circut!

Dan Schwabel’s smart Skip Job Boards and Use Social Media Instead article says:

“If you rely on job boards or corporate Web sites for your job search, you’ll find yourself unemployed for a very long time.   Instead, look to your networks, both in real life and in the virtual world.  A recent Jobvite
survey reflects this evolution in recruitment, noting that 72% of companies plan to invest more in recruiting through social networks.  By using LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter, as well as your own blog, you have more outlets to communicate your personal brand and find a job faster than the competition.”

Take the five minutes to read the full article and let this serve as marketing motivation to help you help yourself to claim your dream job…

Jim – thank you for sharing your marketing savvy – I always love hearing from you!!

Use social media to connect, collaborate and accelerate!!  :-)

    Lorrie:
Thank you for your blog on the Business Week article by Dan Schwabel. The recommendations on using social media tools resonated well with the conclusions of your excellent course on Social Media Marketing in U of Cal, Berkeley, in June. Tools which foster the growth of “virtual communities” can just as well be used to connect, communicate, collaborate and partcipate to promote a very important, and unique, brand called YOU!!

In this regard, I’d also recommend highly the book “Never Eat Alone” by Keith Ferrazzi, which spells out eloquently the vital importance of “networking” and how to proceed professionally::

    * “The fact is that those people who are known beyond the walls of their own cubicle have a greater value. They find jobs more easily. They usually rise up the corporate ladder faster. Their networks begin to grow without much heavy lifting. Like it or not, your success is determined as much by how well others know your work as by the quality of your work”.

    * Tom Peters observed “We are the CEOs of our own companies: Me Inc. To be in business today our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called YOU”.

    * None other than Machiavelli, who should know, observed ” Everyone sees what you appear to be, but few really know who you are”.

We are our own best PR representative to craft the appearance to the outside world that will enhance the impression we want to make. Social Media Marketing provides the tools to make that impression and create a credible personal brand. So, what are we waiting for?

Thanks for the BRILLIANT post Jim!

“We are our own best PR representative to craft the appearance to the outside world that will enhance the impression we want to make.”

So, so true! The most talented professionals are not going to get recognized if they cannot market themselves.

I had a former UCSB student do a final Web Marketing Project on marketing herself…she used tools like Linkedin and Facebook to boost her search visibility, started authoring her own content, made cyber-allies and eventually landed her dream job!

Jim – people like you who invest in lifelong learning are the EXACT types of people organizations need to be successful.

It is sometimes about what we know, but these days, so much about what we are open to learning.

Keep learning, thanks for sending me content like this to share with WMT readers and WHAT ARE WE WAITING FOR???? :-)

See it, want it, own it!
