A few weeks ago, we mentioned what a wonderful tool Twollow is. Twollow is a service that will search Tweets for you according to keywords and begin following the person who posted the Tweet. The idea is you build a wider following in Twitter among people relevant to you. However- there is a downside.
I have tried using Twollow and have found that submitting widely used keywords can result in auto following too many people too fast. Next thing you know, people may see you as a bot and no one wants to follow you back.
The Solution
Twollow recently added an option that will automatically “unfollow” someone who does not follow you back within 3 days. Good idea to use that!
It is also important to be selective when choosing your keywords. Again- if your keywords are too broad- you may wind up following more people than you had bargained for.
Bottom Line:
Twollow is a useful tool when used sparingly and wisely. But nothing can replace the authentic exchange of conversation when you begin following someone. Do not think that you can put your Twitter account on auto pilot, never check in, never converse or reach out to your followers and still find it useful. It just does not work that way. This is not why people use Twitter. I challenge anyone out there reading this to convince me otherwise.
What matters is how authentic and involved you are. I would rather have 30 great followers who I gain knowledge and experience from our interactions, than has 300,000 followers who I have no relationship at all.
