Major transitions in life, like graduations, warrant moments of reflection and inspiration to look forward and boldly step forward into a new future.
Beyond school, life is a series of endings and new beginnings. Endings and their surrounding challenges, both known and unknown, are an integral part of new beginnings. The struggle and resistance a caterpillar experiences in a cocoon (as it seeks to find it’s way), is the very energy needed to fuel it’s metamorphosis into a butterfly.
To “commence” is to
begin…and get started. It’s never too late to follow your passion… to innovate, embrace challenge and grow. The very pursuit leads you the right direction.
We all can be inspired by the wonderful writers, teachers and leaders who have risen through human challenges to achieve great success; so, it’s no wonder they are the very people we ask to speak at our graduations. The following is a small collection of insightful commencement quotes and speeches to inspire and transform a meaningful career and life:
Author Barbara Kingsolver at Duke University said, “The very least you can do in your life is to figure out what you hope for. The most you can do is live inside that hope, running down its hallways, touching the walls on both sides.”
Steve Jobs (actually a college drop-out) spoke at Stanford University and said, “Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.” For the whole enlightening speech, watch it on YouTube: Job\’s Speech at Stanford.
Professor and life-affirming writer Dr. Randy Pausch spoke before he died of Pancreatic Cancer at Carnegy Mellon. He talked about always having fun, working hard, loving and living right… following your passion and having people reside in the core of it. His touching commencement speech is here on YouTube: Randy Pausch\’s YouTube Commencement Speech. In addition, I’ve also included Pausch’s powerful dissertation which shares the embodiment of his life’s learning (designed really for his kids) here on YouTube: Randy Pausch\’s Last Lecture on Oprah.
Businessman and Producer Jerry Zucker at the University Wisconsin-Madison said, “Ask yourself one question: If I didn’t have to do it perfectly, what would I try?”
