Take a moment over your morning coffee (or afternoon joe, comeon, we all need a pick me up sometimes!) to ponder about where your business is at the moment. Don’t panic (or spill your coffee) – no need to analyze your entire business model! Check out this interview: Kelly Cutrone’s Advice for PR Success on Inc.com for a bit of inspiration! Kelly (star of Bravo’s Kell on Earth and founder of Manhattan PR firm People’s Revolution) offers a few insightful tips on running a business these days, including building your brand, saying ‘no’ to pampered clients and surviving during the recession.
Ok so you are not in fashion or PR, but these few words of wisdom permeate all industries and are definitely worth your consideration to revitalize your healthy marketing!
On the industry and adapting to market conditions…
Times have changed. Kelly agrees the old (fashion business) model is outdated. But then again, aren’t most business models outdated? The companies that survive are those that adapt with the new models before they are recorded as ‘models’ in the textbooks.
Making it work…
Drum roll: Social Media! Get online! Kelly suggests getting Facebook fans. Upload videos. Twitter about your latest collection. Blog. It’ll reach the big places. You’re building healthy relationships, while investing a small amount of time and even smaller amounts of money.
Building your brand…
These days your brand is everything. Using social media helps get you out there. But it helps get everyone out there as well. Make sure you are getting the right message and image across on these platforms. What is your news? Why are you different from your competitors? Don’t overestimate yourself – you need to constantly adapt and change.
Kelly’s advice on growth strategy…
Do what you like. Why did you get in the business you are in? Stay true to your principles and motivations. Don’t represent things you do not believe in!
Learn and utilizing the word ‘no’…
Sometimes you just have to say ‘no’ – something that is frowned upon in the service industry. But you have to stick to your principles and take care of yourself and business to ensure you are delivering what you should to your clientele. Believe it or not, saying ‘no’ actually helps build your image – don’t sell yourself short by taking on and agreeing to everything that comes through your front door (or inbox or Blackberry). Maintain your sense, experience and expertise!
