I was interviewed by a super cool podcaster today about the power of social media as a marketing tool.  When I was asked what the #1 challenge was with social media, my inner “marketing therapist” kicked in and my response to the #1 challenge with social media was simple…..commitment issues.

It seems like some people overdose on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc).  They spend hours in it, chase all their friends down and obsess over it.  Or some are in social media, then they become anti-social because they are overly web-media’d out.  Some don’t want anything to do with social media but get dragged in by friends kicking and screaming.

Do you have social media committment issues?

Do you have social media committment issues?

No matter what the initial feelings are, it seems that if there is a huge honeymoon phase with social media, the high highs will usually equate to low lows and the pressure to perform as a social media god or goddess will be too much to tackle.

So, how does one prepare for the commitment issues that social media surfaces?

First, get into social media for the right reasons.  Like, to connect with friends and have fun (I know, holy crap, this web work may be FUN!)  Or to create community, lead a tribe, offer great value, SERVE customers (or prospective customers) and collaborate with peers.

Like any new web marketing relationship, the key is to take it slow, date before getting married, put a toe in the water before you jump in head first.

It’s only web marketing, this is not dramarama, breathe, take social media in slowly, see what you like and don’t like, know what you want, love yourself so you can love others, and try to give as much as you take :)
