I get asked a LOT about the return on investment of social media (Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, LinkedIn, etc). I usually reply with a healthy reminder that marketing is about making relationships and it is through our content that we:
-Communicate
-Collaborate
-Connect
(all of which help build credibility, visibility and sellability)
However, a colleague who is just a big of a web geek as I am and who LOVES THE MATH and quantifying web work sent me a great article today he found on MarketingVox about the Value of Facebook Fans that adds a little more science to my art (or HEART) of marketing approach!
According to the white paper (download the PDF here) Social Media can do more than blow a bunch of air around! I’ll let you read the full article, but here are some super stats to drive home the value of Facebook fans:
• On average, fans spend an additional $71.84 on products for which they are fans
compared to those who are not fans.
• Fans are 28% more likely than non-fans to continue using the brand.
• Fans are 41% more likely than non-fans to recommend a fanned product to their friends.
I am a big believer of quality content to help people know, like and trust you (some of this effort is tough to quantify) but it is geek chic to see social media stats like this that help the people who “take comfort in numbers” to show the power of social media as a marketing medium!

Great stats! But also love the reminder to value relationships and not just the numbers. The PDF download is definitely a great resource for our clients, colleagues, and students!
