Explaining Twitter to Your Parents

The other day I was on the phone with my stepmom when she asked what Twitter was and why it’s so popular? She had seen the “follow us on Twitter” on CNN and she didn’t understand what it was about.

I explained that Twitter is a micro-bloging site where in 140 characters or less you answer the question, what are you doing? These are known as “tweets” and people that have chosen to follow you receive your tweets and in return you receive the tweets of the people that you are following.

I went into further detail about my Twitter community and how I have chosen to follow people who I share common interests with. The way I use Twitter is as a GREAT resource for information that I otherwise would have never found. Twitter has introduced me to some amazing blogs, such as Mashable The Social Media Guide and Mike Elgan a great writer and resource for what’s happing with technology.

In my opinion Twitter is one of the best networking tools around today because it gives the opportunity of connecting with others that you may have never known about. One of the things that makes Twitter so popular is its simplicity, it’s quick and fun also they are continually producing more ways to connect and stay connected.

I have to admit before I was on Twitter I didn’t see the point to it, but it’s like the saying goes don’t judge a book by it’s cover.

My stepmom is intrigued by the idea and my goal is to get her tweeting with the best of them.

Just send her the common craft video. It is an excellent introduction to what Twitter is for the non tech people out there.

[...] For those brand new to Twitter, I recommend Common Craft’s Twitter in Plain English. They do an excellent job of translating the new tools on the wild wild web so everyone can get it! We like to show it to our social media marketing students as an excellent introduction to Twitter. It’s also a great video to revisit for Twitter inspiration and a powerful tool when trying to communicate the power of Twitter to your organization. Our Marketing Maven Kaili also uses it to explain Twitter to her parents! [...]
