"Don't just GO through it, GROW through it"

What does your growth chart look like? ..."Don't just GO through it, GROW through it"

Years ago I randomly heard someone say this quote,

“Don’t just GO through it… GROW through it.”

I wish I knew the name of the woman on the street who I overheard saying it… or who she heard it from. –I’d give them all credit.   Regardless, I’m indebted.  I’ve been using this sparkling morsel of universal wisdom for decades.  I bring it out like a special gift to inspire friends and clients alike.  It’s a reminder of what we’re here to do as humans.  Like all healthy living things, we’re best when we GROW.

So, like a professor-friend of mine, Dr. Jerry Fecht, says,

“The most important thing about our life experiences is how they affect us… How they affect our minds and our hearts.”

If you are presented with challenges, trials, failures, or even successes, be conscious of how you are affected by them.

Are you a better person?  Have you learned?  Are you growing? Are you smarter and stronger? Are you making something out of it, out of your life –or your business?

Isn’t GROWTH AMAZING????…

There’s nothing like a generous heap of ‘crap‘ to help us grow. –It’s our personal fertilizer!

Truly, most of us can look back and see how difficult experiences have in some way positively shaped our lives.   Sometimes you have to ‘fail’ in order to win! (as Lorrie Thomas has blogged about). Setbacks and challenges can be the best catalysts for growth and innovation. (Not that we should be looking for “crap”… but let’s turn it all into healthy growth.)

On the other hand,  be mindful of ‘success’ and how it can also affect you. Success can unfortunately breed conceit.  And, if we’re not careful, it can create deceptive illusions of reality.  Continuing your commitment of learning and growth is a more effective (not to mention humble) means of treating success.

Don’t allow ’success’ to breed complacency. Be wary of relying on ‘old formulas for success.’

—That’s dangerous business in today’s marketplace.  True success is a process, filled with enduring values and ongoing learning.

I’ll leave you one last quote, which as a veteran tennis player made an indelible impression on me.  Over the entrance door of Wimbledon it was said to have read,

“The greatest triumph in life is learning to treat success and failure the same.”

–Which I interpret as:  It’s really best to be balanced, using both as an  education.  The emotions may be there for a short time –with some highs and lows. But, how you react and move forward is key for nurturing growth and future success.

Revel in your life!  Grow and think BIG:-)
