Dear Web 2.0 Fear Specialist-
I just started using Twitter a couple of weeks ago and have heard that it is good to follow a lot of people (I have heard them referred to as Tweeple by the Wild Web Women many times). The only problem is a lot of them are not following me back! Why is that? Am I doing something wrong? Aren’t you supposed to follow someone back in Twitter if they follow you?
Signed,
Lonely in L.A.
Dear Lonely-
Don’t take it personally. The Twittersphere is a very strange and peculiar place. In an ideal Twitteruniverse- people would only join Twitter for the right reasons- to connect and build relationships. And if that were the case, everyone would follow everyone!
But sadly, many Tweeple have become jaded and confused because of a few bad apples out there who are blatantly abusing the community guidelines and rules- so we are becoming a bit more cautious on who we follow; otherwise all of our Tweets will say things like: ONE DAY SALE STARTING TODAY ONLY! EVERYTHING MUST GO! CURTAINS GALORE!
Or you will wind up following some autobot pushing software that promises you will have over 100,000 followers in 3 days without lifting a finger. What is that all about?
I advise you to take a deep look at yourself. Are you bringing value to your network of followers or are you dull and bland? Do you have a picture? Do you have a bio?
Ask yourself what do you look in a friend? Somebody real? Smart? Pleasant? Funny? What qualities do YOU find to be important and chances are Tweeple are looking for the same thing from you. Once you begin showing the Twitterworld what a sensational person you are; I believe you will find many followers and real connections. Remember- it does not matter how many followers you have- what matters is the level of connection you have with them.
Good Luck to You.
Sincerely,
The Web 2.0 Fear Specialist
