What is Social Mention?

Definition of Social Mention: a social media search platform that aggregates user generated content from across the universe into a single stream of information.

In other words you can track what people are saying about your product, or company, or you, or any topic in almost 80 social media networks such as Twitter, Facebook, FriendFeed, YouTube, Digg, etc in real time.

What I like about Social Mention:

VERY INTERESTING DATA.  This data gives a clearer picture to marketers on their success in social media networks and if they are connecting with real people.  You can type in the name of your brand in their real time social media search feature and it calculates the following information:

Your brand’s “strength”- The likelihood you are being discussed in social media.

“Sentiment”-This is the ratio of mentions that are generally positive compared to those that are generally negative.

“Passion”- The likelihood that individuals talking about your brand will do so repeatedly.

“Reach”- The measure of the range of influence. It is the number of unique authors referencing your brand divided by the total number of mentions.

It also displays your top keywords, hashtags and top users mentioning your brand (oooohhh).  I know everyone is concerned about how they are supposed to measure their progress in social media so they can convince their boss or client they are not wasting time and money.  Give this site a try and see if it helps provide some of those answers (in addition to analytics!).

I plan to test out the Social Mention Alerts (email updates of the latest social media info about your brand) and compare them to Google Alerts- a service I use frequently to help me listen and monitor anything that is said about our clients and the Web.  I’ll let you know!

Amy, thanks for the great post! You covered all the major featured.

I look forward to reading your experiences with the Social Mention Alerts. I think you’ll find it similar to Google Alerts but much much better. ;)

Thanks for your comment Jon! I was pleased to find this- so far, I am finding the data provided by Social Mention is much more comprehensive and relevant than what I find in Google Alerts- this could be a new way to conduct online searches!
