News Flash People! All the early mornings I’ve been spending doubling up on my cardio (think spinning class plus thousands of yards of swimming) or running plus weights or elliptical plus stairmaster are doing NOTHING for me – well my cholesterol, blood pressure and all that is perfect, so says my doctor - but I’m focusing on the aesthetics here! So I asked myself recently, why am I working out even more than ever and, (gasp) gaining weight! WTF! Blame it on summer, blame it on the stress of moving, blame it on . . . MYSELF apparently, oh and all that EXERCISE!
The recent cover story of TIME magazine proclaims “Why Exercise Won’t Make You Thin“ and, in a nutshell (mmmm! nuts!) the author, John Cloud, states “The basic problem is that while it’s true that exercise burns calories and that you must burn calories to lose weight, exercise has another effect: it can stimulate hunger. That causes us to eat more, which in turn can negate the weight-loss benefits we just accrued. Exercise, in other words, isn’t necessarily helping us lose weight. It may even be making it harder.”
Crap. I need a new game plan apparently. So if exercise, what I am totally addicted to, won’t make me thin, what else am I addicted to that may take it’s place? Oh right – the internet – social media – Facebook, email, Twittering. Wow! I’m feeling jittery already. That gave me an idea! (Insert light bulb here)
I propose a Social Media Experiment! Let’s all STOP exercising and start spending even MORE time on our social media. I don’t know about you, but I can sit at the computer ALL day without even thinking of food!
WHO’S IN?? Let the games (and by that I mean Scrabble on Facebook, not something outdoors where I’d be expending calories and providing my body with the temptation of over-eating) begin!!
