Happy Groundhog Day

It’s hard for me to believe that today is the start of February….  Where did January go?  I now have to train myself to stop saying happy new year, even though I can barely believe that it’s actually 2009, even at a time when so many of us are excited and hopeful in large part because of our new president, but still a little frightened by what’s going on in the world.

Then I remember that tomorrow is Groundhog Day!  And of course that’s something we can all look forward to.  Luckily here in Southern California we’re spoiled by mild winters, and maybe not as anxious about groundhogs seeing their shadows, but it’s still worth a little shout out to Punxsutawney Phil and his peeps!  In case you’re not familiar with the general fanfare, here’s the main idea: the groundhog comes out of his hole after a long winter sleep to look for his shadow (or maybe he’s hungry, or bored, but I digress…). If he sees his shadow, he regards it as an omen of six more weeks of bad weather and returns to his hole.  If he doesn’t see his shadow, because the day is cloudy, he takes it as a sign of spring and stays above ground.  It’s really quite the opposite of what you would expect….

There’s even an official website about it: http://www.groundhog.org. They could use some of our web design love, and I’d really like to get in there and make some changes!  But there’s great and humorous information there.  And my favorite part is the favicon — the little logo that appears in the top of your browser bar.  (Geek moment: it’s loaded from a file in the root directory of your website, which is named favicon.ico — you can make one yourself, if you don’t already have one.)  It’s a little brown groundhog silhouette!

Whether you see your shadow or not tomorrow, I encourage you to have a great month, rain or shine, and move forward with hope and confidence.

OMG I just had my own little groundhog moment here in Ventura! Of course I thought of Caddy Shack, started singing and everything. From my little “animal trainer” observation mind, I think it was the plant he (or she) was snacking on that kept him above ground, not the sun/clouds… And with all this global warming, who knows if he’ll ever need to go back below…he just may head to the beach for a relaxing day in the sun!
