And You Thought a Notepad is Just For Taking Notes! The Crucial Function of Using Notepad

Having just begun working full-time with Web Marketing Therapy, I feel it is important for me to share one of my first big “No-No” on the job with everyone so that hopefully, no one will ever make the same mistake I did by underestimating the power of Notepad. No, this is not the notepad you bring with you to a meeting or class, this is THE Notepad–the inconspicuous little application on your computer that apparantly does a whole lot more!

I’ve seen people use Notepad during work and wondered why they didn’t just use Word–I mean, the cool fonts, all the functions! I wrote all my blog posts in Word first (so that I don’t rely on the “auto-save” function which seems to be always at the mercy of the oftentimes unreliable internet connection), then I would paste my content from Word into the blog…

Last week, I learned that it was a TERRIBLE idea to neglect first pasting into Notepad from Word, then into the blog. The extra step to paste into Notepad eliminates any and all weird coding that may be hidden within the Word document. In my case, copying and pasting straight into the blog from Word created a messy HTML platform that disallowed anyone on Internet Explorer from viewing my blog post. Our client whose opinion counts the most, uses Internet Explorer. Talk about a BIG OOPS.

I realized my mistake and severely apologized for the blunder as soon as I found out the problem. But what was “not done” was already “done” and I will never not use Notepad for copying + pasting from one document to another again.

Lesson of the Day: USE NOTEPAD to get rid of weird coding issues when copying + pasting. It’s that little extra step that will save you a whole LOT of trouble.
