That is the question. And AP finally has a contemporary answer for us.
The AP Styebook, otherwise known as the journalist’s Bible, has finally updated its guidelines for usage and changed “e-mail” to “email” – losing the antiquated hyphen for the abbreviated term “electronic mail.”

Maybe it’s just the die-hard English-major-nerd slash former journalist in me, but this is definitely BIG news! OK, I concede that most people wouldn’t notice such stylistic minutiae.

However, if you’re a blogger, marketer, publicist, or entrepreneur who works with or is hoping to work closely with media outlets, it may behoove you to take note of this change and implement immediately.

Trust me, from the perspective of the editor or reporter’s desk, it could be tedious and irksome to have to remove a bunch of hyphens from a press release, calendar listing or other content submission when you’re on a tight deadline.

Plus, in addition to showing how media friendly you are, AP is a good place to look for grammar and punctuation standards when conquering the Wild Web!

How about “Web site” or “website”?

Last year AP also officially changed “Web site” to one word “website.”

AP also released social media guidelines in the 2010 edition of The Associated Press Stylebook, introducing a separate section for the social web along with the acceptable usage of “fan,” “friend” and “follow” as both nouns and verbs.

AP releases its new Stylebook each spring. In the meantime, you can send your suggestions to AP here: http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=social_media http://www.apstylebook.com/?do=social_media

Just don’t ask them to include standard usage for “Winning!” or anything else from The Charlie Sheen Dictionary.

Ramon DeLeon, COO of the Dominos Pizza Franchise in Chicago, uses social media to support the simple promise he makes to “WOW you” with your pizza delivery experience.

As the keynote speaker at the Gravity Summit at UCLA, the unforgettable “pizza guy”/ social media rockstar made this powerful observation about word of mouth marketing.

“I cannot make money selling pizzas for One Dollar, but I can make money off the conversation it generates.” @Ramon_DeLeon

While there’s no substitute for Ramon’s unbridled passion for business and his loyal customers, he has traveled the world sharing his real-word social media rules to live by include:

You don’t have a business without customers, so promote your customers (not your business)

Get people to share and give customers positive things to talk about

Put out social media fire with social media water

Real time responses are critical so always be ready to post and share

Make friends with the media

And what is the metric he relies on to measure the success of social media? Are your sales up? Are you making money?

And finally, ARE YOU HAVING FUN?

Thanks to Matthew Gilbert for introducing me to this amazing video.

Here’s a great tip to help make your marketing multi-task!

Uploading videos to top video sharing sites is easier than ever since with help from TubeMogul’s OneLoad syndication. OK, I know I sound like an infomercial, but I truly love the fact that I no longer have to manually upload videos to YouTube and then to Daily Motion, Flickr, Blip.TV and MetaCafe … etc., for maximum exposure.

With TubeMogul, you can save time by uploading a video once and deploying it to multiple video portals including top social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook (Think of it as HootSuite for videos!)

And best of all – it’s FREE. (Unlike other sites I came across in my research including Hey!Spread.)

As they say at TubeMogul, by getting your videos on more sites – with little to no extra effort – your opportunity to gain viewers multiplies!

And to boost your brand and search visibility, apply these strategic photosharing tips for achieving T.W.D. (Total Web Domination) on Flickr to your video sharing!

What does that mean for us as marketers, entrepreneurs and business owners?

I think the The Mobile Marketer says it best:

“Mobile literally puts your brand into your customer’s pocket and in doing so, puts them in yours.”

In a recent article, The Mobile Marketer talks about the growth of the mobile web and how “If you don’t have a mobile strategy then you don’t have a strategy for growth.” With mobile web readers on the rise, having a solid mobile strategy and building a mobile website optimized for all mobile devices is a good way to go. You can also get more tips from The Mobile Marketer on Facebook.

And special thanks to Justin Michael at Lenco Mobile for turning me on to this great site!
